Fri, 15 Dec 2017 21:04:54 +0000 read more]]> Completing a one-year certificate program is an option for those who might not have interest or ability to spend two years in college. Students who have completed degrees elsewhere and who wish to make a change in career plans would also profit from this one-year program. 

Stacking certificates is a great way for students to broaden their knowledge in a variety of areas. SUNY Sullivan offers one-year certificate programs in:

  • Tourism
  • Food Service
  • Accounting Studies
  • Legal Office Assistant
  • Computer Information Systems: Computer Support
  • Office Assistant
  • Casino Operations – and a 15 credit option

A student could spend just one year at SUNY Sullivan and receive a certificate, or decide to continue through the second year to receive an associate’s degree. Or, students can “stack” certificates, by completing one certificate, such as Tourism, then beginning another, such as the Casino Operations certificate.


Students in the Tourism Certificate program learn about the historic perspectives of the hospitality and tourism industry, in the United States and abroad; how to use e-commerce; convention, meeting and exhibition planning; and the roles of hospitality and tourism in the hotel, resort and conference centers. Courses include: Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism, Principles of Advertising, Principles of Marketing, World Geography, Meeting and Event Planning, and Survey of World Cultures.

Food Service

In the Food Service one-year certificate program students spend time learning the skills of food preparation, equipment use, presentation, and service for large scale culinary operations. Students explore the knowledge and techniques required for daily cash controls, safety and sanitation, employee job duties, and record keeping. Courses in this program include: Intro to Food and Baking, Mixology, Sanitation and Safety, Hospitality Purchasing, Applied Nutrition Lab and Human Resource Management.

Accounting Studies

Students are given the background for entry-level employment in an accounting office. Graduates might apply for jobs such as accounts receivable clerk, accounts payable clerk, payroll clerk, or tax clerk. Students can also choose to move directly into the two-year program in Accounting or Business Administration. Courses include: Business Communications, Financial Accounting, Business Law I, Computerized Accounting, and Federal Income Tax Procedures.

Office Assistant

Students prepare for entry-level employment in today’s computerized business office. The program also allows students to move directly into the two-year Administrative Assistant program. Students learn document management skills, the creation and management of databases, spreadsheets, and business correspondence, and the use of a variety of software packages. Courses include: Computer Applications, Human Resource Management, Computerized Business Systems, and Office Management.

Legal Office Assistant

The Legal Office Assistant certificate is a one-year program designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work as legal office support staff. Upon completion, students will be able to accurately manage legal documents; analyze and evaluate data and information; create and maintain a variety of calendars, databases, spreadsheets and business correspondence; use a variety of specialized legal software packages with proficiency; effectively communicate through oral and written techniques; and apply a variety of office management concepts to the automated law office environment. Courses in this certificate include: Introduction to American Law, Office Management, Business Law I and II, Computer Applications for Law Office, and more.

Computer Information Systems: Computer Support

This one-year certificate prepares students to be computer operators in data processing environments or computer clerks in modern, high technology offices. Students take courses introducing them to computer hardware and software. They train in elements of the Microsoft Office suite and learn the basics of computer set-up, operation, operating systems and networking. Students also learn the principles of software maintenance and are encouraged to produce individual projects, enabling them to leave with a professional resumé as well as a certificate. Courses include: Logic and Problem Solving, Networking Essentials, Computer Hardware and Software, and Web Design.

As Sullivan County, as well as the mid-Hudson region, has been working to ready itself for the March 2018 opening of a new resort casino and proposed resort/casino/hospitality industry businesses, SUNY Sullivan has been developing and refining classes and programs designed to provide people with the various skill sets and competencies necessary to work in the industry.

The college offers two casino certificate programs: a 15-credit certificate program, which students can take completely online and complete in one semester, and 30-credit certificate program, which students can complete in one year.

The 15-credit program consists of these five classes: 

  • Intro to Casino Operations
  • Techniques of Casino Games
  • Casino Surveillance and Security
  • The Gaming Industry
  • Survey of Gaming Regulations

The 30-credit certificate offers the above five classes, along with these additional five classes:

  • Beverage Service
  • Hospitality Cost Control
  • Sanitation and Safety
  • Intro to Hospitality and Tourism
  • Meeting and Event Planning
  • Elective Course

SUNY Sullivan, in coordination with our educational and workforce partners, recognizes that residents have a vast range of educational and employment experience. The college has been working closely with Sullivan County BOCES and the Sullivan County Center for Workforce Development to design non-credit courses and boot camp trainings for people with varying skill sets. 

Sullivan County BOCES has designed: 

Essential Math Skills for the Gaming Industry Certification Course, a 12-hour program that focuses on math skills necessary for most gaming occupations such as Guest Services, Cashier, Food Services, and Casino Gaming positions.

Essential Hospitality/Customer Service Skills Certification Course, a 45-hour highly interactive program that provides a number of realistic situations employees might face on a daily basis. The course focuses on these topics: Being Professional, Being an Effective Communicator, Handling Constructive Feedback, and Being a Team Player.

SUNY Sullivan has also developed a series of short-term non-credit hands-on training classes that focus on the hospitality sector and that will lead to a certificate of completion to put you to the front of the line when applying for a job in the hospitality industry. Watch for dates and times when these courses will be offered.

Front Desk/Guest Services Specialist – What makes a hotel guest experience exceptional? A front desk/guest service specialist who provides the highest quality of service and who goes above-and-beyond to offer guests the best experience possible. In this hands-on class, learn several key elements of being part of a team that creates and maintains a healthy front desk/guest service operation that results in satisfied customers. 

Concierge Specialist – A concierge is a person who acts as a personal assistant for a variety of people. In the hospitality industry, this multifaceted career involves knowledge of local attractions, making transportation arrangements, restaurant reservations, sightseeing recommendations, resources for booking reservations and an above-and-beyond dedication to customer service. In this multi-session class, learn the level of service and expectation needed for a concierge position. Strong organizational skills, a warm accommodating personality, and need to be of service to others are necessary to be a successful concierge!

Mixology and TIPS Training/Basic Bartending – Bartending training begins, where else, behind the bar! In this hands-on class students will learn how to open, close and maintain a bar; the secrets of making great drinks; customer service; sanitation; mixology of drinks including wine, coffee and shooters; precise free pouring; money and credit card handling procedures; inventory control; glassware; product knowledge; bar setup and breakdown; and liquor laws/liability including TIPS-Training for Intervention ProcedureS. This training will offer students responsible alcohol service training which could not only make you a more viable candidate for a position, but is highly recommended by the New York State Liquor Authority. 

ServSafe: For Beverage and Food Handling Certification – Learn basic food safety practices for preparing and serving food and earn your food handler certificate from the National Restaurant Association. The ServSafe Food Handler Program is a complete solution that delivers consistent food safety training to employees. The program covers five key areas: Basic Food Safety, Personal Hygiene, Cross-contamination & Allergens, Time & Temperature, Cleaning & Sanitation.

ServSafe Re-certification for Beverage and Food Handling – This class is for those who need to recertify their ServSafe Food Handler Certificate. The National Restaurant Association recognizes the ServSafe certification as valid for five years. However, some state and local jurisdictions and company policies will only recognize the certification as valid for three years. 

Housekeeping Practices and Operations – Housekeeping is about more than just cleaning; it is about establishing proven processes, measuring efficiency, and maintaining quality assurance through continuous monitoring and improvement. The housekeeping department has a big job to insure guests’ utmost comfort and safety. In this class learn appropriate housekeeping operations, OSHA regulations, loss control, inventory management, guestroom cleaning including room assignments, inspections and turndown service, cleaning and maintenance of different types of carpeting and floors, areas of a guest bathroom and how to select and care for each element.

Understanding Cultural Diversity in the Hospitality Industry – Cultural awareness, sensitivity and understanding of cultural differences are critical issue for business success. In this class students will obtain a vital understanding of the different cultures and countries and how accepting them and reacting accordingly in conversation, behavior and attitude is critical to the hospitality industry, which is based on a “person centered” philosophy. 

Line Cook – Line cooks work in restaurants, hotels, and other large kitchens and are exceedingly important. They usually work at a particular station such as a fry station or grill station. Students will focus on the culinary skills that support a chef, will learn knowledge of kitchen tools and utensils, the ability to follow verbal instructions, and how to work under pressure.

Gaming by the Numbers:

According to the American Gaming Association’s report “Gaming Careers: Gateway to the Middle Class” the industry is quite diverse.

Women make up nearly half (48%) of gaming’s workforce – higher than the national average.

Forty-five percent of gaming’s workforce is composed of minority employees – far more diverse than the U.S. average of 33 percent.

Twenty percent of gaming employees are Hispanic – five percentage points higher than the national average.

Gaming also employs more people with disabilities than the national average.
