The New York State Department of Labor ( lists fitness trainers as one of the most in-demand occupations in the Hudson Valley.

Certified personal trainers provide instruction to both groups and individuals in the basic health-related components of fitness, such as cardiovascular exercise, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. Trainers may work with clients on personal fitness goals, with athletes on improving performance in key areas, with older adults on a wide range of health and function-based needs, or with children to promote physical activity, motor development, and the adoption of healthy habits. 

After successfully completing the program, students will be qualified to sit for the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) personal training certification exam. This credential then qualifies students to enter the United States Registry of Exercise Professionals. To find out more about the exam, go to

The Men’s Generals Basketball Team has won the national championship four times, in 1992, 1995, 1996 & 2007.  In addition to winning the championship, the Generals have hosted the national tournament from 2011 – 2016 and will host it for the seventh time in 2018.

In 2014, SUNY Sullivan General Cleanthony Early (Class of 2012), who went on to play for the Wichita State Shockers, was drafted into the NBA in the first round by the New York Knicks.

NJCAA and SUNY Sullivan Eligibility Rules for Intercollegiate Sports

  • Student-athletes must maintain 12 or more credits and have an academic average of 2.0 or more after each semester. A student who drops below 12 credit hours immediately becomes ineligible for athletic participation
  • Second season of participation: student-athletes must have passed a minimum of 24 credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Paul Gerry Fieldhouse

The athletics department is located in the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse, a 30,000-square-foot facility featuring a fitness center, cardio room, indoor running track along with basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton and racquetball courts. The fieldhouse is connected to the college’s geothermal heating and cooling system, making it the largest enclosed air-conditioned facility in the area. In addition to college sporting events, the fieldhouse serves as a popular venue for community events and gatherings.

In addition to competitive sports teams, the college offers a variety of intramural sports programs and fitness & wellness classes.
