SUNY Sullivan recently received a $10,000 grant from the New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID) with support from Sullivan Arc/Sullivan Industries and New Hope Community, Inc. to help furnish a Battle Buddy Center/Veterans Lounge, which serves as a safe haven for student veterans, active duty military personnel and their family members. Located in Room C105, the Battle Buddy Center provides a strong sense of community for veterans, as well as serves as a quiet place to study, to relax, and to receive and offer support.
NYSID will provide the funding over a three-year period to purchase furnishings, equipment, technology and to make upgrades to the room. The Battle Buddy Center also includes a phone linked to a toll-free hotline, as well as literature. The Battle Buddy Center is based on the battle buddy concept, which assigns soldiers with partners to aide and assist them both during and after combat.
The SUNY Sullivan Veterans Club meets each Wednesday at 2:00 in the Battle Buddy Center. The club is open to veteran students, veterans’ family members and supporters, and faculty and staff members who are veterans.
Veterans Work Study Program
SUNY Sullivan was recently approved for the Veterans Work Study Program, which allows qualified veterans to work for the college up to 25 hours per week at the federal minimum wage. These student workers serve as liaisons to help recruit and enroll future veteran students.
