Hi, I’m Debra Lewkiewicz. I am the Chairperson of the Division of Science, Technology, and Mathematics and a Professor of Biology. I received my Master’s of Science degree in biology from the University of California at Riverside. My research focused on assessing a potential behavioral adaptation to parasitism risk in field crickets. Before that, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in biology from Vassar College. While I was an undergraduate at Vassar, I was lucky enough to participate in a variety of research projects as well. I spent my last year as an undergraduate researching the evolutionary ecology of plant resistance in a willow hybrid system. I spent the previous summer studying reforestation methods in an Australian rainforest. Prior to that, I conducted a year-long research project on the effects of riparian deforestation on the sediment load of part of the New York City watershed. Today, my primary academic interest is in behavioral ecology, specifically trade-offs involved in aggregation and behavioral adaptations to predation risk. My other professional interest is, of course, teaching! I primarily teach general biology, and since I became Chairperson, I usually teach non-majors. At home, my interests involve playing with my kids, reading classic literature, and enjoying nature.
