SUNY Sullivan Admissions Department determines the need for placement testing on an individual basis. GED, ACT/SAT scores as well as Regents exams are used in making this determination. The Department of Learning and Student Development administers placement testing.

English Placement testing consists of a written essay of approximately 500 words. Readers from the Division of Liberal Arts and Humanities read each essay to measure student readiness for college level English courses. It may be determined that a student needs a developmental English, English as a Second Language, and/or a first year writing course.

The math placement entails one or two math tests.  Basic Algebra is administered first.  Depending on the results, a student may be administered an Arithmetic Skills and Math Competency assessment. Both are computerized. There are 14 multiple choice questions on the algebra test and 25 multiple choice questions on the Arithmetic Skills test.  You will be given pencil and scrap paper so you can figure out the problems.  A calculator is allowed for Basic Algebra but not for the Arithmetic test.  You may wish to bring a small calculator with you to the testing session.
