Sullivan Wrestlers Qualify for Nationals

Following big wins at Rowan College at Gloucester County on Saturday, a pair of Sullivan Wrestlers will soon head to the NJCAA National Wrestling Championships in Iowa, with a third competitor poised to enter as a wild card.

Dylan Booth, wrestling at 125 lbs, and Rob Cuomo at 197, earned top spots in the 2016 Eastern Regional NJCAA Qualifiers at Rowan College on Saturday, February 13th. 2nd seed Booth beat undefeated 3rd Anthony Romero of Bergen Community College 8-2 to make it into the finals, where he faced top seed Josh Antoine of Nassau Community College. Antoine is ranked 3rd in the Nation in his weight class.

In an exciting match, Antoine came back from a 1 point deficit to beat Booth 6-5. Antoine was named the most valuable wrestler of the tournament.

Cuomo, the number 2 seed, paired off against highly touted Jared Racer of Rowan College who was the 3rd seed in the semi final round. Cuomo came out the winner 12-2, and went on to wrestle top seed Dymere Rappa of Camden Community College. The bout stayed close through 2 periods, until Rappa ultimately got the best of Cuomo and was crowned champion.

Johnny Grandson competing at 149 pounds as the 4th seed. Grandson beat Davin Jefferson of Middlesex Community College by pin before losing to the top seed All-American Toby Hague of Rowan College 12-6. He then came back to beat Axel Urgiles of Bergen CC 9-2. In the consolation finals Grandson lost a tough bout to John Sherlock of Nassau Community College 6-3 to take 4th. Grandson is waiting to find out if he will be selected as a wild card and join Booth and Cuomo in Iowa at the NJCAA Wrestling Championships.
