College Nurse (FT)

DESCRIPTION:

The College Nurse reports to the Dean of Student Development Services. They provide medical services to the campus, particularly students. The College Nurse also provides medical services in conformance with medical directives by the College Doctor in matters pertaining to the specific treatment of medical problems of students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of a current, valid NYS Professional Nurse license.
  • Associate’s degree required; BSN preferred.
  • Minimum of one year experience; experience in a college or school setting is preferred.
  • Ability to make medical judgments in accordance with established procedures and the ability to prioritize and evaluate both medical treatment and administrative tasks while dealing with inquiries.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Medical Duties:

  • Serves as screening and referral center for the College Physician(s) and assists with physicals and screening examinations;
  • Coordinates a schedule for the college physician and nurse practitioners
  • Evaluates and treat students under medical supervision or standing orders in a physician’s absence
  • Provide sick calls and referrals in accordance with procedures for students
  • Maintains medical supplies and medications and dispenses as appropriate
  • Maintains a first aid response service in the event of campus medical emergencies, which includes ordering, maintaining, and positioning first aid supplies and related equipment.  Assesses the need for an ambulance or other special needs in cooperation with Public Safety for physical difficulties and in cooperation with the Counselors for mental health emergencies.
  • Screen medical and immunization reports of students and alert physicians and appropriate staff of difficulties or accommodations needed. Maintains secure medical records for students, which includes evaluation of immunization records and input of information into the student data system.
  • Works with Athletic Department in scheduling physical exams by physicians for intercollegiate student-athletes.

Administrative Duties:

  • Actively seek and evaluate immunization records to assure compliance with state law and health regulations.
    • Communicate shortcomings to students
    • Maintain hard copy and electronic records showing compliant, waived, and non-conforming students
    • Works with College Registration Services to delete the registration of non-compliant students
  • Treat and allow extended access to students who participate in the college insurance program
  • File medical reports from outside agencies as provided. 
  • Regarding the release of information, we will do so in compliance with standing medical orders and the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.
  • Provide recommendations to the Dean of Student Development Services for improving the College Health Services Program.
  • The Nurse will assume other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Development Services.

Outreach Duties:

  • Serves as a resource to faculty and students on healthcare and wellness matters, including the distribution of health information and presentations on medical, wellness, and nursing issues
  • Create and implement robust educational programming for students on health-related topics to improve wellness
  • Maintains liaison with community agencies for referral, outreach, and educational services or programs
  • Maintains liaison with other Health services offices in community colleges and participates, as budget allows, in workshops and area meetings
