Christopher D. DePew is in his 15th year as the Director of Athletics and 18th overall here at SUNY Sullivan. Prior to becoming the Director of Athletics, he served one year as the Coordinator of Athletic Facilities, Intramurals and Equipment, three years as the only full-time Professor in the Sport Management & Physical Education Department, was the Head Women’s Softball Coach for three years, Asst. Men’s Basketball Coach for two years, Head Men’s Golf Coach for two years and Head Men’s Basketball Coach for 8 years during his tenure.
Well respected locally, regionally and nationally as a Coach and Athletic Director, he is responsible for starting the Men’s & Women’s Intercollegiate Cross-Country Running Programs, the Men’s Intercollegiate Baseball program, the Co-Ed Cheerleading program, the Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Programs, the Women’s Volleyball Program and the Men’s Intercollegiate Wrestling Team during his tenure. He was instrumental in getting a state of the art baseball complex built on campus and oversaw the renovations of the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse in 2008 & 2015, the latter after securing a $1,000,000 donation from a private donor.
In February of 2006, Coach DePew was elected to his first of three, two-year terms as the NJCAA Region XV Men’s Assistant Director responsible for overseeing all junior college athletic programs from Long Island, New York City and the lower Hudson Valley. In 2013, he was elected as the NJCAA Region XV Men’s Director for the first of two consecutive two-year terms becoming the first SUNY Sullivan Athletic Director to ever hold this position. He is presently the National Chairman of NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball and sits on the NJCAA National Football, Division III Golf and Lacrosse Committees. In addition to above, he proudly serves as the Executive Director of the NJCAA DIII Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament which has been held “Down in the Bunker” of the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse on the campus of SUNY Sullivan since 2011.
Nationally, Coach DePew was recently elected as the 1st Vice President of the NJCAA National Men’s Basketball Coaches Association that supports all junior college men’s basketball coaches nation-wide and will serve as the Association’s President in 2017 & 2018. He additionally has sat on the Board of Directors of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) for the past 10 years.
Coach DePew will always mostly be remembered for his tenure as our Head Men’s Basketball Coach. During his tenure here at Sullivan, the Generals have amassed an incredible 531-86 record including being 176-28 with him as our Head Coach which makes him the college’s all-time winningest Coach in any sport. In 2007, Coach DePew led the Generals to the NJCAA National Championship with an undefeated record of 32-0. He was named the NJCAA National Basketball Coach of the Year as well as the District V Coach of the Year, Region XV Coach of the Year and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Junior College Coach of the Year. He was selected to coach the East Team in the National Junior College All-Star Game in Kilgore, Texas. Additional accomplishments during his tenure include seven Region XV Championships (1999,2001,2002, 2007,2010,2011, 2013), eleven Mid-Hudson Conference Championships (1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013)) and 7 trips to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament winning it all in 2007 and finishing 2001 and 2002 as the NJCAA National Runner-up.
Coach DePew’s teams were Nationally Ranked in the top 10 for over 200 weeks from 2002-2008. Coach DePew has additionally coached eleven NJCAA All-Americans and has helped over 50 of his players earn full-scholarships at the NCAA Division I and II levels. Coach DePew has had 18 players go on to play professional basketball in the United States and overseas to places such as Denmark, Italy, Holland, France, Germany and England. Two of his former players play with the AND1 travel team that travels the world as a basketball showcase and one player is currently traveling the world with the famed Harlem Globetrotters.
Coach DePew was honored in the spring of 2013 with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. In February of 2106, he accepted the position of Dean of Student Development Services (Interim) and will serve in that role until a new Dean is secured. In his spare time, Coach DePew is extremely active in his community serving on several non-profit Board of Director’s, town committees and organizations, but most importantly serving as a volunteer coach for his son’s Little League, Youth Football and Modified Basketball teams. Additionally, he currently serves as the Chief of the Kerhonkson Volunteer Fire Company in his hometown.
Coach DePew resides in Kerhonkson, NY with his wife Heather and their 12 year old son, David.
