presented by Ultan Guilfoyle

Martin Smith and Marcela Gaviria are veteran journalists and producing partners with RAINmedia, an independent documentary production company in New York City. Their films, many produced and reported for PBS FRONTLINE, have covered the most important news events of our time, from the rise of Al Qaeda, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the culture of risk-taking on Wall Street, America’s heroin epidemic, and the crackdown on undocumented immigrants under the Trump Administration.

Their most recent production was FRONTLINE’s landmark 3-part docuseries, America and the Taliban (2023), which chronicles America’s longest war.

RAINmedia’s films have won every major award in broadcast journalism, including multiple Emmys, duPont-Columbia Gold Batons, George Polk Awards, Peabody Awards, Overseas Press Club, and Writers Guild Awards.

Ultan Guilfoyle is a film producer, director, curator and writer whose films have appeared on HBO, Bravo, and PBS in the United States, and the BBC and Channel 4 in Britain.

Guilfoyle began his film career at the BBC, where he produced music and arts programs including the rock show Whistle Test, and the 1985 rock concert Live Aid. Guilfoyle was the founding director of the film department at the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1997 he co-curated the landmark design exhibition The Art of the Motorcycle at Guggenheim Museum. In 2020, Guilfoyle co-curated The Motorcycle: Design-Art-Desire, a major international exhibition at QAGOMA in Brisbane, Australia.

Working with the late director Sydney Pollack, Guilfoyle’s film Sketches of Frank Gehry was an Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. The film was released theatrically by Sony Pictures Classics. Guilfoyle has made films with architects Renzo Piano, Annabelle Selldorf, and Japanese Pritzker prize-winning architects SANAA, as well as Frank Gehry, with whom he has worked for over 30 years.

When not making films or curating exhibitions, Guilfoyle writes about art and design, among other things. His writing has been published in the New York Times, the Independent (UK), Design Magazine, and, most notably, in four publications by Phaidon Press; Spoon, Phaidon Design Classics, The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire, and the recently published Guitar: The Shape of Sound.
