Students Take the Lead on New Food Pantry Logo

SUNY Sullivan recently unveiled a new mural depicting the logo for its Food Pantry, painted by students Helen Castro and Ashley Williams. This initiative, complemented by a mural on the pantry’s back wall created by Adrienne Lee, showcases the artistic talents and community spirit of the students. All three students are active members of the Executive Board for the Student Government Association and the Art Club, and they are developing their skills in preparation for graduation in May 2025.

The pantry, located in room H076B, operates year-round and is open every Tuesday from 2 pm to 4 pm. It provides students, faculty, and staff with essential food items and fresh vegetables from the on-campus Community Garden. The new mural helps to create a welcoming and positive environment for pantry users.

“We are grateful for inspiring artists Adrienne Lee, Helen Castro and Ashley Williams who are always willing to step up and tackle projects to beautify SUNY Sullivan,” said Debra Waller-Frederick, Associate Dean.

The SUNY Sullivan Food Pantry has become an essential resource for students facing food insecurity amid economic challenges, such as inflation and rising living costs. The pantry serves as a vital support system, enabling many students to continue their education despite these difficulties.

Since its inception, the Food Pantry has seen a significant increase in demand. Initially, most guests visited the pantry twice a month, but as economic conditions have worsened, many now visit the pantry the maximum number of times allowed—four times per month. This heightened need has resulted in a 44.4% increase in the number of guests served and a 230% increase in total visits.

SUNY Sullivan’s Food Pantry relies heavily on local partnerships and grants to remain financially self-sustaining. Recent grants from the Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation, Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, and the Times Herald-Record People to People Fund have been crucial in keeping the pantry operational. Additionally, monetary and supply donations from faculty and staff throughout the academic year help maintain the pantry’s stock.

SUNY Sullivan’s Food Pantry continues to address food insecurity within the campus community, thanks to the collaborative efforts of students, faculty, staff, and off-campus partners. The collective contributions and support ensure that the pantry remains a lifeline for those in need.
