SUNY Sullivan is pleased to announce that it will screen the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” live in high-definition on Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m. in the Seelig Theatre. This special event is part of the Met’s acclaimed Live in HD series, bringing world-class opera to audiences across the globe.
“Fidelio” is a powerful and moving opera about love, sacrifice, and political oppression. The production stars distinguished Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen as Leonore, the courageous wife who disguises herself as a prison guard to save her husband, Florestan (portrayed by British tenor David Butt Philip) from unjust imprisonment.
Completing the cast is Polish bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny as the villainous Don Pizarro, veteran German bass René Pape as the jailer Rocco, Chinese soprano Ying Fang and German tenor Magnus Dietrich as the young Marzelline and Jaquino, and Danish bass Stephen Milling as the principled Don Fernando. Susanna Mälkki conducts the March 15 performance.
The opera will be sung in German with Met Titles in English, providing an immersive and accessible experience for all attendees.
“The College is thrilled to present these premier live performances from the Metropolitan Opera in our very own Seelig Theatre,” said SUNY Sullivan President David Potash. “Thanks to generous contributions from the SUNY Sullivan Foundation and our other local sponsors, we are bringing art and culture to our Sullivan County community.”
