Position Description
The Food Pantry Coordinator supports the operations and mission of the SUNY Sullivan Food Pantry by ensuring students and community members in need have access to nutritious food and essential items. This position plays a vital role in managing inventory, coordinating food distribution, supervising volunteers, and maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment for pantry users. The Coordinator serves as a liaison with local food partners and helps track pantry usage data, contributing to the success and sustainability of the program.
Job Summary:
The Food Pantry Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day management and oversight of SUNY Sullivan’s on-campus food pantry. Duties include inventory control, food pickups and deliveries, volunteer supervision, and support with reporting and data collection. The Coordinator will ensure that pantry operations run smoothly, efficiently, and in alignment with best practices for food safety and client dignity. This position requires regular engagement with students, staff, faculty, and community partners and contributes to the College’s commitment to student support and basic needs security.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in food pantry operations, food service, social services, or a related field
- Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 40 lbs.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities
- Valid driver’s license
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and maintaining client confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a community college or higher education setting
- Familiarity with inventory tracking systems or data entry tools
- Experience supervising student workers or volunteers
- Basic understanding of food safety and storage practices
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail in inventory and administrative tasks
- Ability to drive short or long distances for pick-ups, possibly in a van or truck
- Comfortable interacting with a diverse student population and community members
- Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and deadlines
- Collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate pantry inventory: pick up, organize, label, rotate, and shelve food items
- Conduct food pickups from Sullivan Community Assistance Center, Ulster County Community Action, and Federation for the Homeless
- Submit bi-monthly food orders from the Food Bank and coordinate receiving and shelving (~1,000–1,300 lbs. per order)
- Track pantry inventory, usage data, and process food bank invoices
- Set up food distribution events and assist clients in a respectful and supportive manner
- Notify campus community of available resources and overstocked items
- Recruit, train, and coordinate student workers and community volunteers
- Maintain monthly records and assist with client registration
- Support grant writing and outreach initiatives, if needed
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- This position involves physical tasks including lifting and moving food items and setting up pantry space.
- Work may require standing for extended periods and working in storage or kitchen environments.
- Flexible scheduling is required to accommodate deliveries, pickups, and distribution events. Some evening or weekend hours may be necessary.
