Instructional Assistant – Science Laboratories

The Instructional Assistant assists the Instructional Faculty by implementing the educational program of the faculty.  This will require that the IA maintain a positive and cooperative attitude in the implementation of the program to insure the maximum effectiveness of the laboratory. This position’s anticipated start date is Fall 2024.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent
  • At least two years laboratory experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to interact well with people at all levels
  • Computer proficiency

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for ordering supplies for the office and laboratories:
  • compare prices from multiple sources
  • type purchase orders and submit electronically for approval
  • file copies of orders
  • Responsible for receiving and storing supplies, and maintaining inventory:
  • receive supplies as they come in
  • store supplies and chemicals in appropriate locations
  • record quantities, costs, and locations in computer inventory
  • perform annual inventory of capital equipment (list provided by Facilities Support Technician)
  • file Safety Data Sheets for chemicals
  • store waste chemicals and keep list of waste chemicals to submit to Facilities Support Technician for disposal
  • repair equipment or coordinate repairs with Buildings and Grounds or outside technician
  • dispose of, or surplus, broken or unwanted equipment
  • Responsible for preparing laboratories (as agreed upon with Technical Assistant):
  • provide materials, equipment and chemicals as needed for labs
  • coordinate with faculty to choose and adapt labs as appropriate
  • break down labs and store materials, equipment and chemicals when labs are completed
  • Responsible for maintaining appearance and operation of science labs
  • coordinate repairs and upgrades with Buildings and Grounds
  • Responsible for supervising Technical Assistant and work-study students in laboratories
  • Responsible for other duties as determined by the Chair of the Division of Science, Technology and Mathematics and/or the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs

DISCRETIONARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise laboratories or classes for faculty as appropriate
  • Serve on hiring committees
  • Serve on college committees
  • Organize events (guest speakers, symposia)
  • Serve as a club advisor
