Technical Assistant I – Science Labs (FT)

Reporting to the Division Dean of STEM and Health Sciences. The Technical Assistant prepares science laboratories for instruction and assists students in applying and practicing concepts and operations learned in science classes. The Technical Assistant must be able to handle and store chemicals in accordance with regulatory requirements and to communicate effectively with faculty in the division so that laboratory sessions support student learning. This position has an immediate opening.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, Biology and Chemistry preferred
  • At least two years of appropriate experience in a laboratory setting
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to interact well with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares science laboratories for instruction
  • Assists with the storage and maintenance of the science lab materials inventory
  • Handles and stores chemicals and mixing solutions
  • Attends divisional and other meetings
  • Responsible for setting up and breaking down labs for Chemistry courses and others as agreed upon with Instructional Assistant (IA)
  • Maintains neat appearance of science labs, including notifying Building and Grounds or Housekeeping of maintenance or housekeeping issues
  • Assists IA in maintaining laboratory equipment, lab ware and other supplies
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to maintain a safe environment in laboratories and storage areas
  • Assists IA in maintaining chemical stock, including documentation, organization and safe storage practices
  • Responsible for maintaining waste chemical inventory, including all required documentation
  • Determines materials to be ordered for chemistry labs and other labs of primary responsibility
  • Helps supervise students in laboratories, as requested by Division instructors
  • Proctors exams, as requested by Division instructors
  • Assists IA in supervising work study students in lab prep area
  • Responsible for other duties as determined by supervisors (including Division Dean)
