SUMMARY:
Adjunct clinical faculty report to the Director of the Nursing program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Preferred: A Master’s Degree in Nursing in progress; Master’s in Nursing Education preferred. Experience in areas of responsibility in which clinical competence is expected.
· Required: Bachelors of Science in Nursing with the intent to obtain a MSN and experience in the areas of responsibility in which clinical competence is expected.
· New York State Licensure. May be required to have PA
· Experience working as a Registered Professional Nurse.
· Experience in Associate’s Degree Nursing education preferred.
· Excellent interpersonal skills as necessary for working with diverse groups of people with varying backgrounds.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Review of the syllabus of the associated course to assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the program of learning.
2. Familiarize self with course content to ensure incorporation of theory into student clinical experiences.
3. Maintain current knowledge of agency policies and procedures.
4. Arrange, in collaboration with the Director of Nursing, orientation to the clinical agency.
5. Collaborate with other nursing faculty regarding the identification and selection of clinical experiences for students on a weekly basis.
6. Assist in the evaluation of students’ progress and submit appropriate and accurate records and reports; i.e., grading of weekly assignments and completion of weekly, end-of-rotation, and final semester evaluation tools.
7. Evaluate student’s skill performance and communication techniques in the clinical setting.
8. Contact the Director of Nursing in a timely manner when problems arise concerning clinical experiences.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. PRE-CONFERENCE:
1. Attends clinical site orientation programs and maintains current knowledge of assigned agency’s policies and procedures.
2. Establishes a relationship with clinical facility staff and collaborates in planning clinical assignments.
3. Starts conferences on time.
4. Informs students of the weekly assignment.
5. Provides challenging patient assignments for the students that reflect the learning objectives and facilitate student learning.
B. CLINICAL:
1. Encourage students to use reasoning and judgment in providing client care
2. Arrange for equipment and supplies needed by student in providing client care.
3. Support students in new and complex client care situations.
4. Offer guidance and assistance to students while they care for clients.
5. Participate in client care when necessary.
6. Encourage students in professional development.
7. Evaluate skill competence and plan individual remediation as needed
8. Maintain ongoing collaborative relationship with agency staff.
C. POST-CONFERENCE:
1. Focus on learning objectives.
2. Encourage students to critically think and analyze.
3. Focus the discussion on pertinent client care problems and objectives. Keep to allotted conference time.
4. Document student progress, provide remediation, record clinical deficiencies and anecdotal notes as needed.
5. Provide critical feed-back on weekly assignments.
