SUNY Sullivan is committed to making your college experience as affordable as possible. And although we do our best to ensure that the financial aid application process is simple, it is still a process that generates many questions on the part of prospective students and their families.
Typical Application Process
The steps below will take you through the "typical" application process. Be sure to contact the Financial Aid team with any questions you may have.
The FAFSA is available online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. Take advantage of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, which allows you to link to the IRS from the FAFSA and retrieve tax information directly from the IRS to populate the FAFSA tax return questions. SUNY Sullivan’s Federal School Code is 002879. Submit the FAFSA as soon after October 1 as possible, even if your taxes have not been filed at the time. Use estimated amounts if necessary.
New York State residents should complete the Online TAP- (Tuition Assistance Program) on-the-Web application. When you have completed the FAFSA-on-the-Web, the confirmation page will give you a link to the TAP-on-the-Web application for New York State financial aid. Before completing the TAP application, you will be asked to establish a PIN (Personal Identification Number) for TAP.
Watch for an email from the U.S. Department of Education that will have a link to your Student Aid Report (SAR), which should arrive a few days after you submit the FAFSA online. If you used a paper FAFSA, it will take at least four to six weeks for you to receive a SAR. The SAR explains your eligibility for financial aid. The Financial Aid Office will also receive this information. If necessary, submit corrections (for example, income or tax information) as instructed on the SAR.
New York State residents should complete the Excelsior Scholarship application.
Keep a file of records and copies of applications for future reference. Keep your financial aid award letters.
Track your financial aid documents and view your award letter through the Jenzabar Financial Aid portal. You should use the log-in information that you used for your admissions application or the information you received once you registered for classes.
When your FAFSA is received, you may be selected for a process called verification. We will be contacting you for additional documentation, such as 2019 income.
If we are requesting your IRS Tax Return Transcript, you MUST use one of the options below to retrieve it:
Link: We recommend that you try to use the Data Retrieval Tool first if selected for verification.
- You can log in at fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and select Make FAFSA Corrections
- Under "Financial Information", update filing question
- Click “Link to IRS”
- Enter the required information on the IRS website exactly as displayed on your 1040
- Once the IRS has validated your identification, your IRS tax information will display. You must transfer your information from the IRS website. Do Not Make Changes
Online Request: Go to https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript.
Be sure to request a Tax Return Transcript as opposed to a Tax Account Transcript. Please note; if you request your transcript to be mailed to your address, it can take up to two weeks to receive.
If we are requesting the IRS Verification of Non-Filing Letter dated on or after October 1, 2019, you must complete IRS Form 4506-T and fax it to the IRS at number listed on the 4506-T form.
The IRS Form can be downloaded from the IRS Website at: https://www.irs.gov/uac/about-form-4506t.
If you are applying for a Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan, you must complete the above steps and the Federal Direct Loan Request Form and return the form to the Financial Aid Office. You must also complete the Master Promissory Note AND the Federal Entrance Counseling online.

Hand in all outside private scholarships to the Financial Aid Office.
Log in to My SUNY Sullivan for information on tuition, fees, dorm room, and meal plan costs and Certificate of Residence directions.
Complete your admissions procedures, as you must be admitted to SUNY Sullivan in a matriculated program and be in good academic standing to receive financial aid.
You must reapply for financial aid each year you are in college.

An institutional financial aid professional is expected to always maintain exemplary standards of professional conduct in all aspects of carrying out his or her responsibilities, specifically including all dealings with any entities involved in any manner in student financial aid, regardless of whether such entities are involved in a government sponsored, subsidized or regulated activity.
The Financial Aid Professional shall:
- Refrain from taking any action for his or her personal benefit.
- Refrain from taking any action he or she believes is contrary to law, regulation or the best interests of the students and parents he or she serves.
- Ensure that the information he or she provides is accurate, unbiased and does not reflect any preference arising from actual or potential personal gain.
- Be objective in making decisions and advising his or her institution regarding relationships with any entity involved in any aspect of student financial aid.
- Refrain from soliciting or accepting anything of other than nominal value from any entity (other than an institution of higher education or a governmental entity such as the U.S. Department of Education) involved in the making, holding, consolidating or processing of any student loans including anything of value (including reimbursement of expenses) for serving on an advisory body or as part of a training activity of or sponsored by any such entity.
- Disclose to his or her institution, in such manner as his or her institution may prescribe, any involvement with or interest in any entity involved in any aspect of student financial aid.
Please note that this pertains to FFELP loans awarded prior to the 2008-2009 school year and to alternative loans. Since the 2008-2009 school year Sullivan County Community College continued to process alternative loans but began and will continue to award student loans through the Federal Direct Loan program.
- Sullivan County Community College works diligently to ensure that its officers, employees and agents avoid conflicts of interest in connection with their responsibilities relating to providing and administering student loans for our students. In accordance with state and federal law, you should be aware that the following activities are prohibited. Some of these prohibitions involve technical definitions which can be found by referring to the applicable state and federal law. If you wish to obtain this information, please contact the financial aid office.
- Sullivan County Community College does not enter into any revenue-sharing arrangement with any lender.
- No officer, employee or agent of Sullivan County Community College who is employed in the financial aid office or who otherwise has responsibilities with respect to education loans will solicit or accept any gift or other thing of value from a lender, guarantor or loans or servicer of education loans. You should be aware that certain items provided or contributed by lenders are not considered gifts such as training materials, philanthropic contributions unrelated to education loans and entrance and exit counseling services.
- No officer, employee or agent of Sullivan County Community College who is employed in the financial aid office or who otherwise has responsibilities with respect to education loans will accept from any lender or affiliate of any lender any fee, payment or other financial benefit (including the opportunity to purchase stock) as compensation for any type of consulting arrangement or other contract to provide services to a lender or on behalf of a lender relating to education loans.
- Sullivan County Community College will not for any first-time borrower assign, through award packaging or other methods, the borrower’s loan to a particular lender or refuse to certify or delay certification of any loan based on the borrower’s selection of a particular lender or guaranty agency.
- Sullivan County Community College will not request or accept from any lender any offer of funds to be used for private education loans, including funds for an opportunity pool loan, to students in exchange for the campus providing concessions or promises regarding providing the lender with a specified number of loans made, insured or guaranteed a specified loan volume or a preferred lender arrangement for such loans.
- Sullivan County Community College does not request or accept from any lender any assistance with call center staffing or financial aid office staffing.
- No employee of Sullivan County Community College who is employed in the financial aid office or who otherwise has responsibilities with respect to education loans or other student financial aid and who serves on an advisory board, commission or group established by a lender, guarantor or group of lenders or guarantors will receive anything of value from the lender, guarantor or group of lenders or guarantors for such service.
