BACKGROUND:

New York State’s Climate Action Plan is the most aggressive climate and clean energy initiative in the nation, calling for an orderly and just transition to clean energy. Implementing this plan requires a massive investment in the economy. The number of clean energy jobs in New York is predicted to increase by more than 200,000 this decade, greatly accelerating the need for an educated and skilled workforce. The majority of these jobs are in the building sector, as the plan calls for eventually electrifying all of NY’s 6 million buildings.

Clean energy jobs currently comprise an estimated 17% of all jobs in New York’s economy and and of those positions, 85% are in occupations that are either facing increased demand or a need for updated skills. A trained workforce is critical in the transition to a clean energy economy. Employers are having difficulty hiring with approximately 90% of employers in clean energy sectors reporting they struggle to fill open positions.

Clean Energy Careers NY is a collaborative initiative to create equitable clean energy careers pathways in New York to achieve the state’s climate and clean energy goals.
