Reporting to the Chair of the Science, Technology, and Mathematics Department, the Technical Assistant prepares science laboratories for instruction and assists students in applying and practicing concepts and operations learned in science classes. The Technical Assistant must be able to handle and store chemicals in accordance with regulatory requirements, manage purchasing and inventory, and communicate effectively with faculty in the department so that laboratory sessions support student learning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in science, Biology or Chemistry preferred;
- At least two years of appropriate experience in a laboratory setting;
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Ability to interact well with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities;
Computer proficiency.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with faculty and staff to maintain a safe environment in laboratories and storage areas.
- Coordinates with faculty to choose and adapt labs as appropriate.
- Prepares science laboratories for instruction, including: Providing materials, equipment, and chemicals as needed.
Setting up and breaking down labs. - Maintains the appearance and operation of the science labs, including notifying the appropriate department(s) of maintenance/housekeeping issues or needed repairs/upgrades.
- Orders, receives/stores, and maintains an up-to-date inventory of all lab supplies and equipment.
Serves as a chemical hygiene officer. - Maintains chemical stocks, mixing solutions, and important documentation
- (e.g. Safety Data Sheets), while following safe handling and storage
- practices.
- Maintains waste chemical inventory, including all required documentation.
- Coordinates chemical and biohazardous waste disposal.
- Supervises the work-study students in the lab prep area.
- Helps supervise students in laboratories and/or proctor exams, as
requested by department instructors. - Responsible for other duties as determined by the Chair of the Science, Technology, and Mathematics Department and/or the Dean of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Health Sciences.
