Direct Support Professionals Academic Success Coach (FT)

JOB SUMMARY

The Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Academic Success Coach will support DSP’s currently working in the field, as they pursue SUNY Sullivan’s DSP micro-credentials I-III. This position will involve advising and mentoring students through their coursework, as well as supporting them as they pursue their National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) e-badging.

This is a grant-funded position and reports directly to the Dean of Student Development Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A solid understanding of student diversity, retention issues and strategies in higher education.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Human Services.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work closely with faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines.
  • A strong understanding of the Direct Support discipline.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The DSP Academic Success Coach will:

  • Serve as the Academic Advisor for DSP micro-credential students, which includes registering them for the courses required in each of the three micro-credentials both fall and spring, and where applicable winter and summer intersessions. As students near completion of the three micro-credentials, advise them on pursuing the Human Services AS degree and refer them to Financial Aid as needed.
  • Identify at-risk students and develop interventions for success. This will include working closely with One Stop personnel (e.g. tutors and personal counselors) and faculty, and meeting regularly with students.
  • Review student requests for personal emergency funding and work closely with Student Billing to ensure funding is processed correctly and timely.
  • As needed, work with local agencies to recruit DSP’s into the program. This may include attending and presenting at local agencies and speaking with potential students in groups and individually and collaborating with the college’s Director of Admissions.
