The Met: Live in HD’s screening of Massenet’s “Cinderella”—plus a pre-opera talk and kids and family costume parade
SUNY Sullivan will present a special Valentine’s Day screening of The Met: Live in HD production of Jules Massenet’s “Cinderella” on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. in the Seelig Theatre.
Described as “…enchanting” by The New Yorker and “…simply lovely” by The New York Times, this abridged, English-language presentation offers an accessible introduction to opera for audiences of all ages.
Previously recorded live from the Metropolitan Opera stage, the family-friendly production stars mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Cinderella and mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo as Prince Charming, conducted by Emmanuel Villaume.
Based on Charles Perrault’s 1698 fairy tale, “Cinderella” premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1899 and remains one of Massenet’s most beloved works. The opera blends romance and humor with lush orchestration, from elegant court scenes inspired by French baroque traditions to the dreamy, otherworldly love music at its heart. Kelley Rourke’s English translation makes the story especially welcoming for first-time opera-goers.
Presented as part of the SUNY Sullivan Foundation’s Community Cultural Connections Series, the 90-minute screening features world-class vocal performances, lavish costumes, and a fast-paced retelling of the classic glass-slipper story.
