Nursing

SUNY Sullivan offers a rigorous pre-licensure Nursing program to students in preparation for the NCLEX- RN and entrance into the workforce as a registered professional nurse. Completion of this program leads to the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) degree.

The program utilizes the Patricia Benner framework of Novice-to-Expert to guide the student through the process of learning, the application of the nursing process, and critical thinking to provide safe, competent nursing care to patients throughout the life cycle.

Students' progress through the program in sequential order, first obtaining the science foundation and then layering specific knowledge regarding the management of health conditions, health promotion, and the skills needed for effective nursing care.

Students have experiential clinical learning in multiple healthcare facilities in Sullivan, Orange, Ulster and Broome counties in New York. And in Wayne County Pennsylvania.

Clinical experiences for Nursing students are scheduled by the Nursing Department and may include day, evening and weekend time frames. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to clinical and community facilities in Sullivan and surrounding counties. All clinical components run concurrently with lectures. To progress, students must satisfactorily complete all
clinical components.

Students must also complete assignments in the Nursing Skills Lab and Simulation Lab. These assignments are completed both inside and outside of class time.

Students must complete the Nursing Program within four academic years of the date of enrollment in Nursing courses. They must receive a C+ or better in all Nursing courses to progress in the program.

To be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse, graduates must meet the criteria for good “moral character” as determined by the New York State Education Department.

All students in the program must have a federal and state criminal background check, a federal and state child abuse background check, 9-panel Nursing AAS, drug screen, and have proof of immunizations (including COVID) or titers to prove immunity. Transfer students who want to matriculate into the nursing program must provide a letter from their previous Nursing program Director stating that the student did not leave for behavioral or clinical issues relating to professionalism or patient safety.
