Rtusamhāram/The Six Seasons/The Gathering of Time synopsis:
Ritusamhara is a lengthy Sanskrit poem or mini-epic credited to Kalidasa. The poem is divided into six cantos, one for each of the six Indian seasons: grisma (summer), varsa/pavas (monsoon/rains), sarat (autumn), hemanta (cool), sisira (winter), and vasanta (spring). It is said to be Kalidasa’s first work. The words Ritu (seasons) and sahra (group) are used combined in this context to mean “gathering together” or “group.” Thus, Ritusamhara has been rendered as Medley of Seasons or Garland of Seasons, or maybe more appropriately as the “Pageant of the Seasons,” but it has also been mistranslated as “birth and death” of seasons, owing to the other meaning of samhara as destruction.
