Starfish Student Information

What is Starfish?

Here at SUNY Sullivan, we want to see You succeed! That’s why we’ve adopted an early alert system and communication tool called Starfish®. Throughout the semester, students and advisors receive alerts when academic concerns arise that may interfere with a student’s success. The Student is then connected with advisors, faculty, and other offices on campus that can help. Students can also use Starfish to view staff and faculty office hours or schedule appointments with their primary advisor, instructors, or staff online.

Starfish is available to all currently enrolled SUNY Sullivan students.

What can Starfish do for you?

  • View your Success Network (Course Instructors, Primary Advisor, etc)
  • View your instructors and advisor’s office hours online
  • Schedule appointments with your advisor, faculty, and staff online
  • Receive academic updates from faculty
  • Learn about campus resources

Access the Starfish link easily by logging in to your Brightspace account.

Computer Users:

    • Log in to Brightspace and click on the Starfish link on the homepage.
    • Log in to Starfish with your SUNY Sullivan username and password.

 
Pulse App Users:

      • Click the SUNY Sullivan homepage link.
      • Select Starfish from the drop-down menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
      • Log in to Starfish with your SUNY Sullivan username and password.

Starfish messages will be sent to your Sullimail college email account by default. However, you can also receive messages via a secondary email account or text messages.

To receive messages via a secondary email:

    • Once you are logged in to Starfish, open the navigation menu (top left corner) and click your name, and then Profile.
    • Enter your secondary email address in the Alternate Email field.
    • Check the Also send notifications to my alternate email address box.
    • Click the Submit button to save your updates.

To receive messages via text:

      • Enter the email address of your mobile phone in the Alternate Email field. This address will be a combination of your phone number plus carrier information. This format can be seen by clicking on the mobile phone icon next to the Alternate Email field.
      • For example, if your provider is AT&T, you would enter your phone number (with the area code) followed by @txt.att.net (8885551212@txt.att.net)
      • Check the Also send notifications to my alternate email address box.
      • Click the Submit button to save your updates.

This is a list that contains your primary advisor, instructors, success coaches, and services offices you are connected to for the semester. Students can easily find the contact information, including office hours, for their entire academic support team in one place!

Your Connections:

  • Once you are logged in to Starfish, click on the staff or faculty member’s name.
  • Click the Schedule button.
  • Select what you need help with from the drop-down menu and/or click the circle next to the appropriate option, then click the Continue button.
  • Use the small calendar to identify days with available office hours. Click the desired date in the small monthly calendar to display availability on that day.
  • Available time slots on the selected day will appear. Click the circle next to the desired time slot and click the Continue button.
  • Your selection will be shown on the next page. Click the Confirm button to confirm your appointment. You will receive an email with the appointment details.

Your Services:

  • Click on the Schedule button under the Service that you desire.
  • Select what you need help with by clicking the circle next to the appropriate option and then click the Continue button.
  • Click on the desired appointment date on the calendar.
  • Click the circle next to the time you prefer and click the Continue button.
  • Click the Confirm button to confirm your appointment. You will receive an email with the appointment details.
