Theater Program Announces Auditions for Fun HomeShare on Twitter!
Auditions are set for Tuesday, August 28 and Wednesday, August 29 from 6-9 pm in the Seelig Theater, located at 112 College Road in Loch Sheldrake, NY, or by appointment. Callbacks will occur, if needed.
Fun Home will be the second production of SUNY Sullivan’s 2018-19 Women Playwright’s Season, and highlights the first mainstream musical about a young lesbian and the first all-female writing team to win the Tony Award® for best musical. The SUNY Sullivan Theater Program has chosen to produce a diverse array of plays written by women this year in order to highlight the fact that although female customers account for 65% of ticket revenue, only 39% of actors, 36% of directors, and 28% of writers of plays are women.
For the auditions, actors will need to prepare 16 bars of a musical theater song, and will be asked to read sides from the play. Scripts are available and may be secured in advance by contacting Jessica López-Barkl at firstname.lastname@example.org. Actors will be asked to fill out an audition form. Additionally, attendees should bring their personal calendars or schedules to the auditions.
Rehearsals begin on August 30 and will be held Tuesdays through Fridays, from 6-9 pm. A rehearsal schedule will be developed based on the actors’ conflict schedules. Technical rehearsals are scheduled for Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4 from 10am – 10pm.
Performance dates are scheduled for November 8 – 18, Thursdays – Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm.
The production is also looking for participants interested in serving as technical crew, stage management, designers, and musicians, and are invited attend the auditions to meet the director, or contact López-Barkl via email.
A Synopsis of Fun Home (from the Samuel French script)
When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
